What You Need in a 4WD Recovery Kit: The Complete Checklist

Most recoveries are boring. A bit of digging, tracks under the tyres, drive out, keep going. The gear in your kit is what keeps them boring, because the moment someone improvises with unrated equipment, a stuck vehicle becomes a dangerous one. Snatch loads run into the tonnes, and hardware that fails under that kind of energy does not fail quietly.

Here is the full checklist, from the mounting points on the vehicle through to the gear in the bag.

Start with rated recovery points

Before any strap goes in the bag, look under the front of the vehicle. The thin factory loops are tie-down points for the transport ship, not recovery points, and a snatch recovery can put eight tonnes or more through the attachment. Fit rated, chassis-mounted recovery points at the front, and check the rear: a rated hitch receiver recovery point in the tow bar is the clean solution there. This is the least glamorous purchase in four wheel driving and the most important one.

The core kit

  • Snatch strap. Sized with a minimum breaking strength of two to three times the GVM of the lighter vehicle in the recovery. An 8,000kg strap covers most utes and wagons. Retire it after hard use, cuts or fraying, because straps are consumables.
  • Rated shackles. Bow shackles stamped with a working load limit of 3.25 tonnes or better, or soft shackles, which are lighter, easier on paintwork and safer if something lets go. Carry at least two.
  • Recovery tracks. A pair minimum, four for serious sand trips. Most full-size tracks run 1,100 to 1,200mm long, which matters when you are working out where they will live on the vehicle.
  • Recovery damper. Thrown over the middle of any strap or winch line under load to drag it down if it fails. Cheap, light, no excuses.
  • Riggers gloves. Non-negotiable around winch rope, and useful for everything else.
  • Long-handled shovel. Clearing sand or mud from under the diffs does more than any strap. Half of getting unstuck is digging.
  • Tyre deflator and gauge. Airing down is the recovery you do before you are stuck. Dropping from 36psi to 16psi on sand roughly doubles your footprint.
  • Air compressor. Because airing back up at the bitumen is not optional.
  • A proper bag, plus basics. Keep it all in one grab bag with a first aid kit, and make sure there is a UHF radio in the vehicle so the two drivers can hear each other over engines.
  • Worth adding. A drag chain for shifting fallen timber, a hitch receiver recovery point for the rear, and a small tarp to kneel on, because every winch recovery involves lying in whatever you are stuck in.

A pre-built recovery kit covers most of that list in one hit and usually costs less than buying piecemeal. Just audit what is in it against the list above, because kits vary.

If you run a winch

A winch adds its own gear. A tree trunk protector, three metres or so, because bare rope around a tree kills the tree and destroys the rope. A snatch block or recovery ring to double the line for heavy pulls or redirect the angle. A winch extension strap for the day the anchor is 15 metres past your rope. And dampers on every span of line under load, not just one. All of it lives in the recovery gear category for a reason: none of it is optional once a winch is doing real work.

The Safety Rules

  • Never recover off a tow ball. Tow balls can shear under snatch loads and have caused fatal accidents in Australia. Always use rated recovery points.
  • No rating stamp, no recovery. If a shackle, strap or recovery point doesn't have a stamped load rating, it should not be used for vehicle recovery.
  • Clear the area. Everyone except the drivers should stand well away—at least 1.5 strap lengths to the side, and never in line with the recovery.
  • One person directs the recovery. Decide who is in charge and agree on hand signals or communication before anyone connects or tensions the recovery gear.


What actually gets used where

Sand recoveries are almost all tyre pressures, shovel and tracks. Mud is where the snatch strap and winch earn their spot, usually with tracks helping the exit. Rock work is winch territory, slow and controlled. If you mostly do beach runs, weight your kit toward deflators, tracks and the compressor, and let the winch wait until the trips justify it.

Store it where you can reach it

A recovery kit buried under the drawers, the fridge and a week of food is a kit you will unpack in the rain. Give the bag a home you can reach with the vehicle loaded. Then inspect it once a year: straps age even unused, stitching frays, shackle pins gum up with sand, and soft shackles wear where they bear. Write the purchase date on each strap with a paint pen, and treat anything that has taken a genuinely violent snatch as suspect regardless of how it looks.
