
A diff lock forces both wheels on an axle to turn at the same speed, no matter how much grip each one has. That single change lets a vehicle idle up a rutted climb that would otherwise end on a snatch strap.
Why an open diff gives up
A differential lets the wheels on an axle rotate at different speeds, which is what makes corners possible on the road. The catch is that an open diff sends drive down the path of least resistance. Lift a wheel in a rut or park it on wet clay and all the engine's effort spins uselessly into the wheel with no grip while the one with traction sits there doing nothing. That is the moment a capable 4WD stops dead with three wheels planted.
What happens when you lock it
Engage the locker and the two axle shafts are mechanically joined. Both wheels turn together regardless of load, so the wheel with grip keeps driving even while its partner hangs in the air. Momentum stops being your only tool, and slow, controlled progress over broken ground becomes possible.
Centre vs rear vs front diff locks
• Centre diff lock. Found in full-time 4WDs, it locks the split between the front and rear axles so drive cannot all drain to one end. In a part-time 4WD, shifting into 4WD does the same job through the transfer case.
• Rear diff lock. The cross-axle locker most people mean when they say locker. Ties the two rear wheels together and turns rutted climbs and offset holes into slow, boring work, which is the goal.
• Front diff lock. The last resort tool. Huge traction, heavy steering and a vehicle that wants to plough straight ahead, so it stays off until nothing else works.
When to use it
Low range engaged, and the locker switched on before the obstacle, not halfway through wheelspin. Rutted climbs, rock steps, offset moguls and greasy off-camber sections are locker country. Keep speeds low and steering inputs small, and switch it off as soon as the hard section is behind you.
Technique still matters with it engaged. Steady throttle, let the vehicle walk over the obstacle, and if a wheel starts spinning, back off rather than adding power, because a locked axle spinning both wheels digs twice as fast as an open one.
When it works against you
On bitumen or any high-grip surface, a locked diff fights every corner, winds up the driveline and can break axles, so it stays off. In tight turns a locker pushes the nose wide, which matters on narrow shelf tracks. And on sand, most driving needs momentum and tyre pressure rather than a locker, though it helps pulling away from a bogged start. Factory, aftermarket and traction control
Plenty of 4WDs now ship with a factory rear locker, and modern brake-based traction control imitates one convincingly, right up until a long slow climb overheats the brakes doing the work.
