Factory high beams are adequate at 80km/h and marginal at 110. Once you are on a country road at dusk with roos moving, they are not enough, and the fix is aftermarket lighting. The choice usually comes down to a pair of driving lights, a light bar, or both. They do different jobs, and the spec sheets go out of their way to hide that.
What is actually different
Driving lights are the round pairs mounted on the bull bar. Their optics are built to throw light a long way down the road in a concentrated beam. Light bars are a row of LEDs behind a single lens, and they spread light wide across the road and both verges rather than punching into the distance.
Neither type is brighter as a category. The LEDs are often the same. What differs is where the optics put the light, and that is the whole decision.

Spot vs flood: the honest pros and cons
- Spot (or pencil) beams reach a long way, with quality pairs lighting past 700m. The cost is tunnel vision: a tight hotspot ahead and dark verges either side, which is exactly where animals come from.
- Flood (or spread) beams light the verges, fence lines and the inside of corners, and they are far more useful on tight tracks. They give up distance to do it.
- Combo beams mix both optics in one housing. For most people touring on a mix of highway and dirt, a combo pair is the right first purchase, which is why nearly every brand leads with one.
Reading the specs: lux beats lumens
Lumens measure total light output at the LED. It is the number brands advertise because it is the biggest one available, and it tells you almost nothing about performance on the road. The figure that matters is distance at 1 lux, roughly the brightness of a full moon, measured to a standard. A light that holds 1 lux at 900m outperforms one claiming triple the lumens with no distance figure behind it.
Colour temperature is worth a glance too. Around 5,000K is easy on the eyes over a long night. Cooler 6,500K-plus light looks impressive in the driveway and comes straight back at you in dust and rain.
So what is the best setup for touring?
Start with a quality pair of combo driving lights. That covers distance and a usable spread from a single install. Add a light bar later if you spend serious time on slow technical tracks at night or want the verges lit wall to wall. Wiring and the legal side
Driving lights and light bars must be wired to work with high beam only and drop out when you dip to low beam. That is the rule everywhere in Australia, and it is also the reason to use a proper plug-and-play wiring harness with a relay and correct fusing rather than a length of speaker wire and hope. Some late-model vehicles also need an anti-flicker or CANbus-friendly loom to stop the dash throwing errors. States differ on how many extra lights you can run and where they sit, so a compliant fit is part of the job, not an extra.
Aiming: the free performance upgrade
Most lighting complaints trace back to aim, not hardware. Set the vehicle on level ground at its normal touring weight, because a loaded rear lifts the nose and points everything at the sky. Spots go dead level or a whisker up so the hotspot lands 300 to 600m out. Spread beams angle slightly down and out to paint the verges without blinding oncoming traffic. Ten minutes with a tape measure and a wall does more for night vision than the next model up ever will, and it is worth redoing after a suspension change.
